Bootstrapping Our Way Across the Curriculum

Here is a fascinating spin on immersion from one of the Center's favorite friends, Botgirl Questi.

I think the really interesting aspect of this story is her take on immersion.

But on a side note: Her confession is creating some anxiety in the blogosphere, and the funny thing is, we don't really know that much more about her! It really shows how significant gender and family can be. If you know I'm a woman, with a husband, and no children, do you really think you know me?

Know your Strengths or "Strength Finder 2.0" is less expensive than DiSC. You simply need to purchase a book from your book vendor of choice and then there is a code on the inside cover that lets you answer a bunch of questions and it gives you your top five traits. The book provides background detail on each possible trait and how they interact with others.

DiSC assesses you on four different traits. Here is a wikipedia link for DiSC.

Both put you in a box, but Strength Finder 2.0 has more boxes. :-)

I need to check out those "Know Your Strengths" and the Disc survey. I know we talked about these already. I want to get one or both, or something else, into my conflict resolution class.

I game so for me - male/female/other I have avatars, alts and toons who are different genders, species, etc. (Although being Horde is very important.) Online, in virtual worlds I don't assume that someone is that gender or species, but I do assume they will role play accordingly. In the movie, Second Skin, Edward Castronova talks about gamers and suggests (paraphrasing) that creating the character and playing the character can be very freeing who has had their persona assigned to them for socioeconomic reasons or even based on physical appearance. I've enjoyed Botgirl's tweets for awhile now, I won't enjoy the sarcasm and the disctinct point of view any less now.

As far as self-perception, has anyone taken a " Know Your Strengths" or Disc survey lately? These have been popular lately - wish they were setup to allow your co-workers to take them. It would be interesting to see how the people around you percieve you.

I have given up on trying to perceive myself! LOL! I'm putting together a course on conflict resolution, and I've found some on-line surveys that help us understand how others see us. I'm really looking forward to playing with those and discussing the results with students. It seems there would be something really empowering in understanding how others see us. I guess you're learning a bit about that right now!

Good point! It's really hard to break through our ingrained cultural and psychological preconceptions and just experience who they are being in the present moment. Although I guess the same could be said about how we view ourselves. :)
